What Is Natural Horsemanship

What Is Natural Horsemanship?

Natural horsemanship is a popular horse training technique that focuses on developing a kind and gentle approach with horses. It rejects abusive training methods and is based on observing the natural behavior of free-roaming horses. Natural horsemanship trainers or practitioners believe it is a radical departure from traditional techniques. The movement is becoming increasingly popular within the equestrian community.

Natural Horsemanship is a philosophy of working with horses based on the horse’s natural instincts and methods of communication.

Natural horsemanship trainers must use firm but fair force when necessary to ensure the safety of the rider or handler, as well as the horse. We simply do not use fear or pain to motivate the animal, nor do we attempt to force the animal into submission.

Natural Horsemanship is a phycology based training technique based on basic kinder concepts than horses have been treated in the past.

Pressure and Release

The fundamental method involves exerting a certain amount of force on the horse to signal a desired action, and then promptly relieving the pressure once the horse reacts, either by complying with the request or by taking a preliminary step towards the intended action, known as a “try”.

The crucial factor is the timing, as the horse gains understanding not from the applied pressure, but from its subsequent release. These approaches are rooted in the concept of reinforcement, rather than relying on physical coercion, which is generally avoided by practitioners of Natural Horsemanship whenever feasible.

Building a Connection

Natural horsemanship is a widely used method of training and interacting with horses, emphasizing effective communication and understanding between horse and human. The main goal is to establish a strong bond and develop a relationship based on trust. Unlike traditional methods, natural horsemanship trainers prioritize positive reinforcement rather than punishment.
